Tredici 05:38
--- THIRTEEN There’s a knife in my left pocket. I rarely use it, most of the time it's a burden. Just enough to make me drown, and more metaphors about the sea. It's as if I've already said everything I wanted to, so what is left? But do you remember our conversations? We thought they were nothing, but they were as heavy as knives buried in my pockets. Like scars and tattoos, your new haircut, your hair still hasn’t grown back. You're the symbol of what I used to believe in, you will be the symbol of what I believe in again. You lent me a pair of scissors and I kept them. I've got a transparent box at home, filled with pieces of paper. I've got a clock in my kitchen that never goes beyond the number twelve. And I think back to your room and to all those photographs on the walls that I used to look at, while you'd go out to take new ones in those empty summer squares. I would look out the window to see you come back. But on my window there's been a spider web for years. I never touch it, 'cause I don't throw away almost anything. I let the dust do its duty, and I thought that was natural. But where are all the things that used to be important? Pyramids and dinosaurs, video tapes, and our first car trips. There is a spider web in the corners of my room’s window, I built it myself, I started in my twenties. I trapped my favorite life and all the things I used to know, locked into new ambitions and a constant pressure. There’s a knife in my pocket and I'm coming back, I’m not using it against myself this year. I'm just waiting for the right time to cut the thread of a spider web that goes all the way to the mirror, to an image of myself that I rarely manage to stare at. I've got a knife in my pocket and I don't use it, most of the time it's just a burden, to which I was almost getting used to.

Ogni Inverno 04:47
--- EVERY WINTER I have finally been to Glasgow. It was December and it was dark. I saw reflections of myself on the shop windows, I followed the neon signs. I was feeling distant and absent-minded before I got to know about you. On that winter night you went out when it was already dark, to get a breath of fresh air and take pictures. You reached a half-empty square, only a carousel, a few guys, and some crows looking for food. They asked you why were you taking pictures, they told you to delete them, they told you they didn't want to be in them. They chased you, they reached you right before the bridge, they threw you to the ground, they kicked you and made you apologize. When you raised from the ground, a confused murmur all around you: "We did not want to meddle, we thought it was your boyfriend, we didn't know they were strangers or else we would have stopped them. But we thought it was just your boyfriend with his friends". Glasgow gets cold in December, I will always be far away from this city, even when I walk in the center. A few months later I saw that picture: I couldn’t see anyone, just a few lights on a black background. Every winter it gets dark early, every winter people stay home and every winter the streets are empty, every winter, the shadows in the avenues. Glasgow gets cold in December, when my mind is somewhere else and my pocket is heavy.

--- IN THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS The TV turns on to the same channel as yesterday, I already know all the news by now. I don't think I will manage to do anything else today, and there is nothing I’d want to do anyway. Like when we were in Rome, and we were not on holiday. You told me: "Hospitals are bad places." "I don't think so, not in moments like this. After all, here there's no room to think that everything is fine. It's as if they give due weight to things." Today, after breakfast, I think I won't be doing anything, I wouldn't manage to. In Villa Borghese I was looking for better words for you even if I would have rather stayed silent. This lump in my throat isn’t fear, but the feeling that there's no point in making plans anymore. And there will be worse days than yesterday, and late-night phone calls. How could I think that I’ll be ready? Getting dressed quickly to get out, lacing up shoes with trembling hands. Not today. Not this month. Not this year.

--- ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER I still look at the same pictures, the same movies, the same TV shows. I'm getting used to the news, to the shock, to the astonishment. I stare more and more into the void. I see less and less. The only letter I have ever received was a letter of apology. Left home while I wasn't there, written on green paper, with care; but among these papers, scissors and spider webs, it's hard to find it. It's impossible to find myself. Eight years later, I can't even remember what the words were. I never found it again in the drawer of my desk. And I am sure, if I am what I am today, deep down, it's also because of you; but if every morning I keep forgetting the things I've done and the people I've loved, am I still the first person – the protagonist of my stories? Or am I a new character, with the same old anger? With these heavy pockets and these drawers thrown on the floor, my room is the crime scene, but I was just looking for... But it scares me to think too much, to hear the sound getting louder, the echo of the explosions, the smoke coming up the stairs. On the other side of the wall, the same confused eyes, the same trembling hands, the same knife in a pocket. When I lean further, I see myself again, born on the other side of the river, without shelves filled with books, without your letter of apology. (When the train tickets have been ripped, the chimneys have been demolished, these Negazione records have been sold, names and surnames have been forgotten) It scares me to think too much, to imagine someone else's life, to look for a reason for everything and to find myself always there. Alone in a corner, looking for glances, but finding only indifference and new enemies.

Kalieaswari 01:49
"All'alba il cortile si svuota. Sto meglio col sole negli occhi." Qualunque cosa. --- KALIEASWARI “The courtyard empties at dawn. I feel better when the sun is in my eyes." I took that from an old notebook that was closed for years. Change is constant, but I miss the naivety of the years we spent chasing sundrenched summers and new sounds, before the humiliations, before those "do you have any dignity left", before we stopped trying and started hiding all the time. But your words made sense. An answer to defiant questions: we still need a happy ending, something to hold on to. Anything.

--- THE PROPP SCHEME But there's no happy ending without a comeback. The sunset looks endless when travelling westbound. Brick wall houses, luggages that weren’t checked at the border. Closing my eyes on a bus trip, without even sleeping, means hoping to open them only once I am home. But it's as if everything I've lived through is only something I was told. But if there's one thing I'm sure of it’s that every story follows the same structure. But if the pages are not in the right order anymore, and I don't know where it all began, I will need to look for an ending by myself. I won't let anyone else write it. With a knife in my left hand, I know where to go for once.

Epilogo 08:41
Conosco quegli occhi e so dove fa male. --- EPILOGUE It's in my bedroom drawers. It’s on the school desks and on northbound trains. It's in the half-empty square where they chased you and beat you up. And it's staying up in the night for hours on end, it's browsing the newspaper hoping not to find your name. But I can read lips from a distance. I know those eyes and I know where it hurts. And it's for everything I've seen, everything I've heard. Every unwanted gaze, every unwieldy word, and I know that maybe it's too much, but I can't stop thinking about it... Every hit is the falling thread of a spider web. Every single body on the ground is a brick to start building something new. And the ticking before the explosion is a clock in the kitchen that starts working again. My getaways are so infantile, enough to bring me back to when I was hoping it would rain hard: an excuse, just an excuse to run wild in the streets, feet in the water and light pockets. But in the dream I had tonight, laying on the sidewalk, there was almost everyone, it looked like my funeral. No news on TV, no accusations or religions. It gets hot in Milan when it’s summer, I wake up in a lake of sweat. And there's no guilt in the eyes that I see in the windows, there's no blood on my hands as they quickly reach for the keys. Back in august 2005 I promised myself I would never betray my true soul, but I've been gathering so much dust since then. You're the symbol of what I’ve always believed in, you're the symbol of what I still believe in. And for ten summers I've been looking for that moment again, on plateaus, crowded beaches and foreign capitals. And then I came back, I smelled the pine trees again, I left the clothes on the floor and the knife in the sink. I let the water flow, I let it rust, I don't need it anymore.

--- ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA “Today, while driving, we took a country lane. The air was full of that luminescent white that we often see in Milan. There were still the signs of machine guns on the walls of the houses, I didn’t know these things still existed. It’s been just five days and we’re already a lot further South than we’ve ever been together. Do you remember what was it like to look at Italy from the other side of the sea? While we were getting here we passed a chimney by the sea, it was as tall as a minaret. Do you remember Istanbul? I wonder when will we be able to go there again. I was so scared today, I wish you were there with me. I will come back in a few days. I don’t understand why you didn’t want to tell me about it. I can’t wait to be home, I wanna know what you wanted to tell me; what made your hands tremble when you said goodbye.”
